LEXINGTON, NE — Many central Nebraskans are cleaning up after severe storms knocked down trees and took out power lines on Thursday.

Nebraska Public Power District says 1,336 customers were without power in Lexington because of a weather-related outage. About 650 customers were still without power at 5:30 p.m.

Lexington was included in a Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued at 1:23 p.m. It was the first warning issued in the state on Thursday.

NPPD also reports that 141 customers are without power in Ashton, a small town west of St. Paul. The utility is not offering an estimated restoration time.

The storm also prompted athletes, coaches and fans to take shelter at the Class D-5 District Track and Field meet in Burwell. People were ushered into interior areas of the school to wait out the storm. Afterwards, organizers had to pull some of the meet equipment back into place after it was moved by the wind.
