Jason Murphy returns to Tri-Cities, teams up with Kearney native for new morning show
Flood Communications owns both News Channel Nebraska and 98.9 The Vibe.
KEARNEY, NE — It’s a new station with a familiar voice.
Jason Murphy is back in the Tri-Cities. The broadcasting veteran hosted Kearney’s top morning show for eight years in the 2010s. After a four-year absence, he’s back on the air.
“My time here in Kearney, I believe, was cut short. It was one of those things where I always absolutely loved the market, I loved the people, I loved the atmosphere," Murphy said. "It just really was a really great place to live.”
Murphy is hosting “Murphy in the Morning with Tim” on 98.9 The Vibe, which was rebranded from the former Power 99 just last week. Tim is short for Timmari Byrn, a Kearney native making her radio debut.
“I’m excited to do some fun things with the community," Byrn said. "But also, having grown up here and having my friends and family - my kids are super excited - I think it’s going to be great.”
The show features regular news and sports updates from Doug Duda and plays the greatest hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s. The rest of the content? That’s a wild card.
“What are we going to talk about? I don’t know," Murphy said. "We’re going to have a conversation.”
What Murphy does know, is it’s good to be back in Central Nebraska.
“It was someplace that I really had no plan to ever leave. At this point, I’m glad I’m back. I’m able to continue on with what I like doing, and apparently, what the listeners like hearing,” Murphy said.
The show airs weekdays from 6:00-10:00 a.m. on KKPR 98.9 FM and 989thevibefm.com.
