News Channel Nebraska will televise the state track and field meet on Thursday and Saturday next week.

KEARNEY, Neb. — The Kearney boys track and field team will be bringing some hardware when they head to the state meet next week.

The Bearcats dominated one of four Class A district track meets on Tuesday, outscoring second place Papillion-La Vista South 177.6-117.2.

On the track, Zaire Lagrone-Miller was the star. He finished second in the 100 and won the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.91.

“That’s been my goal all year, break a 22," Lagrone-Miller said. "I haven’t been able to do it, I haven’t been running as well. I finally got my kick down at the 150 mark and that helped me a lot.”

He ran the anchor leg of Kearney’s 4x100M relay that finished first with a time 41.93, four hundredths of a second away from a school record.

“We take it serious, we want to be here," Lagrone-Miller said. "We don’t mess around when it’s time to 4x1. It doesn’t matter how tired we are, how sore we might be, but when that 4x1 is rolling around we’re ready.”

Lagrone-Miller extended Kearney’s team points lead after Aydan Nelson and Cole Brandt built it by winning the pole vault and shot put respectively.

“We didn’t see it coming like this," boys head coach Broc Howard said. "We thought we could score over 100 points and kind of be in the thick of things, but kids performed really well from top to bottom. It started with the field events and ended with the 4x400.”

The Bearcats finished by taking first in the the final event, the 4x400M relay.

“We just have a lot of upperclassmen that have really bought into it the last three to four years," Howard said. "Those guys kind of show the younger guys how to do things. It’s been that way here for 30-40 years. I’m just really proud of the guys the way they competed here today.”
