LINCOLN, Neb. -- Former Nebraska Interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph allegedly choked an adult woman during an argument at his Lincoln home on Wednesday afternoon, according to court filings.

The woman reportedly told police that 54-year-old Joseph “pushed me on the couch and strangled me.”

After pushing Joseph off of her, the woman then states Joseph followed her into the kitchen “grabbed her hair from behind and pulled her backward, causing her to fall to the ground” and punched her in the face, Sgt. Stephen Redlin wrote in the affidavit.

The affidavit stated that officials got to the scene just before 2 p.m., police found the victim with noticeable swelling to her left eye and several strands of hair clinging to her pant leg, which she stated were pulled from her head by Joseph.

A witness at the house, an adult man and relative to the victim, reportedly stated to police he saw the alleged assault take place. He noted he went to the balcony overlooking the main floor and observed the two in the living room. He said he saw Joseph’s hand around the victims throat. The man reported Joseph was able to get ahold of the victim’s phone and attempted to flush it down the toilet. Police then saw it on the counter in a bag of rice.

On Wednesday around 3:10 p.m., Joseph was contacted along the 7500 block of San Mateo Lane in Lincoln where he was taken into custody. Joseph waived his Miranda Rights and provided a statement denying that he ever struck the victim or grabbed her hair.

Joseph as lodged for third degree domestic assault and strangulation.

Joseph was released Tuesday afternoon after posting $2,000 bond.
