SIDNEY - Authorities say the investigation continues into Tuesday’s gas well blowout and fire north of Sidney, as officials confirm one fatality and crews work to monitor the site for any remaining hazards.

According to a Thursday press release from Cheyenne County Sheriff Adam Frerichs, the incident was reported around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday near the Tallgrass facility at 2853 Road 111. Emergency communications received word of a natural gas well blowout that produced heavy flames and thick smoke. The well site was being operated by Tallgrass, Frerichs said.

Deputies, Sidney Volunteer Fire Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Nebraska Fire Marshal, Regional West Ambulance, Emergency Management and multiple contractors responded. A special response team from Greeley, Colorado, also assisted.

Two nearby residents were evacuated as crews worked to contain the fire and monitor gas levels. Officials emphasized there was no danger to Sidney residents. County Roads 111, 113 and 28 were closed Tuesday to allow emergency personnel and Tallgrass workers to operate safely.

Frerichs said Tallgrass activated its critical response team, bringing in additional support from across the country. The sheriff confirmed one fatality resulting from the incident. No additional details about the worker’s identity have been released.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family of the deceased." Frerichs said. We are committed to supporting the ongoing investigation and ensuring the safety of our community."

All roads have since been reopened. Officials say crews are continuing to monitor the area but report no ongoing hazards.

The cause of the blowout and fire remains under investigation in coordination with Tallgrass, the National Transportation Safety Board and other agencies.

Frerichs thanked first responders, volunteers and Tallgrass partners for their work during what he called an “emotionally trying time.”

Further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
