KEARNEY, Neb. — A Kearney man will do jail time for what was described as an aggressive assault involving a Maglite flashlight.

Buffalo County District Court Judge John Marsh sentenced 37-year-old Anthony Quintana to 4-8 years in prison on Tuesday. The sentence comes after Quintana pleaded no contest to first-degree assault and attempting to use a deadly weapon to commit a felony.

The assault happened in August 2023 in Kearney. Specific details of the incident are sealed by the court, but the state prosecutor described the victim’s injuries as serious and lasting in court on Tuesday. Court documents list a flashlight as the weapon used in the assault.

The victim did not participate in a deposition and wasn’t going to participate in trial. The prosecutor and judge both described the plea agreement, which recommended the 4-8 year sentence, as “generous.”

Marsh said Quintana will be available for parole after 10 months. He gets credit for 418 days already served.

Quintana has previous convictions for meth, criminal impersonation and is a registered sex offender.
