CLARKSON, Neb. -- A 19-year-old from Schuyler was killed in a northeast Nebraska crash Thursday afternoon.

According to the Stanton County Sheriff's Office, the accident happened just before 3:00 p.m. on Highway 15 northeast of Clarkson. Sheriff Mike Unger said the crash occurred near the Stanton/Colfax County line.

In a press release, Unger said that his office's investigation determined an SUV was northbound on Highway 15 when it turned left off the highway toward 822nd Road and directly into the path of a southbound pickup. Unger said the investigation indicated the pickup had no time to attempt to avoid the collision.

The driver of the SUV, Jeyco Gonzalez of Schuyler, was ejected from his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The 24-year-old driver of the pickup was extricated from the vehicle by Clarkson Fire and Rescue and was transported to the West Point hospital. There he was stabilized and then taken by medical helicopter to Bergan Mercy hospital in Omaha for treatment of his severe injuries.

The accident scene blocked a portion of Highway 15 for more than three hours, Unger said.

Seatbelts and airbags did deploy in the pickup.

The collision caused the front transaxle of the SUV to detach from the frame and it ended up in a ditch off the roadway, Unger said.

Gonzalez was operating the SUV with a revoked license and authorities are still trying to determine if alcohol may have been a contributing factor, according to Unger.

Stanton County Emergency Management also assisted at the scene.  Both vehicles were destroyed in the high speed impact.
