WAYNE, Neb. -- For the first time since 2012, the Wayne State College football team is off to a 2-0 start.

The Wildcats topped Northern State 13-6 in Wayne State's home opener, giving first-year head coach Logan Masters two wins in his first two games.

Masters, a former Wayne State wide receiver, was a graduate assistant coach the last time the Wildcats started 2-0. Wayne State opened that season with three straight wins, something the Wildcats will attempt to do on the road next week against Minot State.

The Wildcats forced four turnovers, including three interceptions. Tanner Cooper picked off two passes, while linebacker Alex Kowalczyk notched an interception and game-high 12 tackles.

Wayne State took a 10-3 lead in the second quarter when Nick Bohn found Jadon Johnson for a 60-yard strike. It would be the only touchdown of the game.

After a Payton Eue field goal pulled the Wolves within one possession with 1:03 left in the third quarter, the Wayne State defense clamped down and prevented Northern State from scoring the rest of the way. The Wolves' final four drives ended with a missed field goal, an interception, a punt and a failed final play from deep in Northern State's own territory.
