GRAND ISLAND - Longtime Grand Island Senior High varsity soccer coach Jeremy Jensen is no longer with the program.

The announcement comes following a Facebook post Jensen made on Thursday afternoon.

In the post, Jensen said Grand Island Public Schools leadership asked him to resign following a lengthy Facebook post Jensen made nearly a week ago that was critical of the school district. Jensen's post goes on to say that he refused to resign and was subsequently fired.

"The board of Education has totally fumbled their responsibilities. They are trustees of our school’s oversight, and they have failed in their duty..." part of Thursday's post read.

The Grand Island Public Schools communications team confirmed Jensen was no longer with the program via email late on Thursday afternoon, naming assistant coach James Panowicz as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

"Our Activities Director will be working alongside Coach Panowicz and the team to help ensure a strong finish to the season," the email states. "We're excited to see what the future holds for our talented student athletes as they continue to grow, learn, and thrive!"

Jensen led the Islander boys soccer program for the past 16 years, with it reaching its peak accomplishment with a Class A runner-up finish in 2011.

In addition, Jensen served as the mayor of Grand Island from 2014 to 2018.
