WILBER - The Wilber-Clatonia Wolverines are getting ready to battle top-seed Norfolk Catholic in the C-2 semifinal on Friday night. It’s the fourteenth straight postseason appearance for the Wolverines, but this year they’ve been short-handed.

Senior Houston Broz leads the team in receiving yards and talked about what this year has been like.

“It started out good, we had some injured people come back and help us, but now they’re out again, so it’s just been a battle with injuries, but now it’s going pretty good for us,” Broz said.

Broz’s description of pretty good stems from back-to-back playoff upsets of #4 Yutan and a 32-13 thumping of #5 Hastings St. Cecilia. When you have a tenured coach like Lynn Jurgens, experience comes into play. Senior Adam Kotas spoke on what it’s like to play for Jurgens.

“Great atmosphere,” Kotas said. “He’s got a legacy, obviously, at Wilber. We’ve made the playoffs several years in a row, he’s a great guy and a great coach and he makes us better every week.”

As the 13-seed in the Class C-2 playoffs, some might call the Wolverines underdogs. For Broz, all that does is encourage them even more.

“It makes me a little angry,” Broz said. “But then again, they aren’t expecting us to come out and win so it’s a great feeling when we come out and win and have success.”

For both seniors, winning a state title would be a dream come true.

“It’s something I’ve always dreamt of and I know my teammates and other seniors have been dreaming of it too,” Kotas said.

“It’s been a dream of mine since I was little,” Broz said. “I watched the 2016 team win the championship and I just really want to finish the season strong.”
