OGALLALA - Sophomore Talissa Tanquary and senior Daniel Bashtovoi paced the Sidney girls and boys cross country teams to a sweep of the team titles at the Nebraska School Activities Association Class C5 District Meet at Crandall Creek Country Club in Ogallala on Thursday afternoon.

"We knew going in that we had a shot to bring home both championship spots," Sidney Coach Donna Weideburg said. "That was one of the best race days, collectively, I think they’ve all had. We knew the boys would have to battle Broken Bow and the girls would be in a race with Chadron."

Bashtovoi claimed the boys individual title on the 5K course in a time of 16:27. Tanquary was the district runner-up in the girls race at 19:40.

Senior Cameron Brauer ran a 16:42 to finish as the district runner-up in the boys race. Senior Mitchell Deer was fourth at 17:04. Senior Treyson Johnstone passed two Broken Bow runners with 100 meters left to place 10th with a time of 17:28 and helped the Red Raiders secure the team championship with 16 points..

Broken Bow was second and Gothenburg finished third. All three teams will run at the NSAA state championships next Friday in Kearney. The Indians were the only team to defeat Sidney during the regular season at the Ogallala Invite.

Behind Tanquary was senior Lydia Peters in fifth place at 20:21, Jenju Peters in 10th at 20:47 and Rheo Dykstra in 13th with a time of 21:15. The Lady Raiders (31 points) won the team title for the first time since 2014. Chadron (47) was second and Broken Bow third.

"To say I'm proud of them would be an understatement," Weideburg said. "They're a true joy and it is an honor and a privilege to be a part of this program."
