Diller-Odell volleyball staying ‘in the moment’ coming off consecutive state titles
LINCOLN — The Diller-Odell volleyball team is used to its season ending with a trophy presentation.
The Griffins are back-to-back state champions. They’re hoping for the three-peat but trying to stay present. Head Coach Reba Hestermann says the team motto is ‘In the Moment.’
“We want to do things in our gym that are in the moment for us and that we know we’re doing what we can to be successful on the court,” Hestermann said.
Senior outside hitter Mad Meyerle says the team is buying in.
“I think that we’re making it really clear as a team that we aren’t the same team as we have been in the past," Meyerle said. "We’re our own team, but that’s ok and we’ll do what we need to do when it comes down to it.”
Diller-Odell is looking for a new setter for the first time in four years after Addison Heidemann’s graduation. She’s walking on to the volleyball team at Iowa State. Her sister, junior outside hitter Karli Heidemann, is a nationally ranked recruit. She says it will be different but good to be the lone Heidemann on the team.
“Obviously, me and Addison’s chemistry, it was super close," Heidemann said. "(Even with) her being gone, that chemistry with the other girls will still be there.”
Sophomore Keira Hennerberg is expected to take over the setter role. Meyerle and Heidemann expect to take over the leadership duties.
“I think that that’s a role that me and Karli both need to fill," Meyerle said. "So that’s a big goal of mine this year is becoming the leader that Addison was.”
The Griffins start their season on August 31st at Southern.
