Bridgeport boys and girls extend win streaks in sweep of Morrill

MORRILL, NE — Both Bridgeport basketball teams rained dawn three-pointers in Morrill as the Bulldogs swept the Lions Thursday night.
The Lady Bulldogs hit eight shots from beyond the arc and it seemed for most of the contest, they would need every single one. Morrill played Bridgeport tough for most of the games. Lions' senior Ilycia Guerue had eight points in the first quarter, but three three-pointers from Bridgeport helped them earn a 19-18 lead after one.
Bridgeport slightly expanded their lead in a back-and-forth second quarter, taking a 34-29 advantage in to the break. By halftime, four players, Ruthie and Olivia Loomis-Goltl for Bridgeport, and Libbie Schaeffer and Guerue for Morrill were in double figures.
Bridgeport came out strong in the third quarter behind eight points in the period from sophomore Mackenzie Liakos. The Lady Bulldogs lead by as many as nine in the third before the Lions roared back at the end of the period. Foul trouble for Bridgeport gave Morrill eight free throws in the frame. They used that and strong offense in the post to trim the lead back to one. The teams entered the fourth with Bridgeport leading 48-47.
Then the fourth quarter happened. After trading buckets to start the final frame, the Lady Bulldogs went on a run full of buckets in the post and stifling defense to seal the game. Overall in the quarter, Bridgeport outscored Morrill 29-10. The Lady Bulldogs won 77-57. It's the 12th win in a row for the Bridgeport girls.
Ruthie Loomis-Goltl lead Bridgeport with 25 points with Olivia Loomis-Goltl close behind with 24, including 12 points in the fourth quarter. Liakos also finished in double digits with 14 points.
Ruthie's 25 points gives her 454 points on the season, breaking the school record of 448 points in a year set in 1988-89 by Amber Landrigan.
Schaefer paced the Lions with 20 points while Jaiden Steiner added 16. Guerue finished with 15 points.
The Lady Bulldogs end the regular season at 20-3. They will face the winner of Bayard and Hemingford on Tuesday in a C2-12 sub-district semifinal game. Morrill has one regular season contest left against Gordon-Rushville on Saturday. The Lions will play Gordon-Rushville again on Tuesday in the other C2-12 sub-district semifinal.
