Powerful wind storm blows through Sidney area

SIDNEY - A powerful wind storm blew into southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle on Wednesday evening, causing power outages and impacting travel.
An 86 mph wind gust was registered at 9 p.m. four miles east of Scottsbluff and two miles east of Torrington; Alliance had a wind gust at 78 mph; winds gusted up to 77 mph near Gering; and a 75 mph gust was recorded at Crescent Lake.
The Sidney airport had a gust of 62 mph and Kimball felt a 63 mph gust. The highest wind gust at 105 mph was reported 11 miles southwest of Warren Air Force Base near Cheyenne.
A high wind warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. Friday for the entire Nebraska panhandle, northeast Colorado and southeast Wyoming. Wind and storm warnings are issued from Montana to Wisconsin and from the Canadian border to Oklahoma.
Numerous semi tractor-trailers were seen blown over along Interstate 80 and Interstate 25 in Wyoming on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service office in Cheyenne.
High West Energy reported 112 total power outages Wednesday night, including 56 in Cheyenne County, 22 in Laramie County, 17 in Logan County and 6 in Kimball County. Power outages have also been reported in the Scottsbluff, Minatare and Chadron areas. The majority of the power outages have been fixed as of Thursday morning.
Meteorologists with the weather service said the biggest impact will continue to be transportation, especially for light weight and high profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers. More vehicle blow overs are possible.
Winds are expected to diminish Friday evening. Wind chill values are expected to be between zero and 10. Temperatures will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s through the weekend.
