MACY - Students in Macy will soon have an opportunity to expand their education thanks to a new multi-million dollar facility.

Omaha Nation Public Schools broke ground on a $15 million career academy on Monday. The facility will be located right next to the school, and is expected to take a little more than a year to complete.

"It's a fairly aggressive timeline, it will be starting now, and we're looking at getting it open by the 2021 school year," said Matt Smith, Project Manager with BVH Architecture.

The academy will help students earn a certificate or learn a specific job skill as they go through high school. The six pathways that will be offered include CNA/Nursing, Culinary Arts, Construction, Automotive, Entrepreneurship/Business, and Early Childhood Education.

The academy will be the largest of its kind in northeast Nebraska, and Omaha Nation Principal Jon Pickinpaugh says the academy will go a long way towards a change that he believes is needed in education.

"We want to be the face of that change, especially in northeast Nebraska," Pickinpaugh said. "Not only do kids need to learn through teachers and direct learning styles with textbooks, but they also need that hands-on experience so that when they come out of school they have some sort of career, or some sort of interest that they may be able to use within their future."

In addition to a 300 seat auditorium and six career laboratories, the academy will also house an infant and toddler daycare, a Chief Store that will sell Chief apparel and other items, as well as a cafe that will be open to the public.
