BEATRICE – Flower and plant lovers were getting a chance to help out the Beatrice High School Science Club and Greenhouse program on Friday.
A drive-up geranium sale was taking place in front of BHS…..five-dollars a plant…or a little added donation on top was perfectly acceptable.

"We had quite a few customers right at the beginning, really excited to see what plants we had for sale".

High School Science Teacher Paula Heinz says red and pink geraniums…and a few potted or hanging plants were available……all grown in the high school greenhouse, just south of the building.
It’s been not-your-typical school year, when it comes to raising the plants….what with students kept out of school buildings during the last quarter of the year.

"We orchestrated some things so we maintained distancing and that sort of thing...and unfortunately students couldn't see that because of the directed health measure. But, we're glad that at least they got to plant them and see them start to grow. And so, we're just going to finish this and hopefully fund the plant sale, next year".

The proceeds go to the science club for activities, for maintaining the greenhouse, and also providing some scholarship support for graduating seniors going to college. Jensen says there are about eighty students in the science club, a number that’s remained consistent in recent years.

The plant sale allowed buyers to drive up to the circle in front of the high school, provide their donation, and have their plants loaded into their vehicle, without getting out….that social distancing requirement we’ve all grown used to, this year.
