Jefferson County authorities provide update on Wednesday shooting incident
FAIRBURY - Jefferson County authorities responded to an incident in the alley on the 800 block of 7th Street in Fairbury just after noon Wednesday.
A white male, who hasn't yet been identified, was found sitting on the hood of a vehicle in the backyard of 812 7th Street in Fairbury.
He had a gunshot wound to his right leg, and was yelling that someone had shot him. When asked who, he did not see anyone and did not know where the alleged shooter was.
While being interviewed at the hospital, it was learned that he had accidentally shot himself. The male subject was then transferred to a Lincoln hospital for further treatment. He is believed to be in stable condition.
Jefferson County Sheriff Nels Sorensen confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Fairbury Public Schools and Jefferson Community Health and Life went into lockout around 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, but the lockout was lifted less than 15 minutes later.
The scene was secured by law enforcement. The Nebraska State Patrol was assisting the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff’s Office obtained a search warrant for the premise and upon completion of the search warrant, various ammunition, gun parts and controlled substances were found at the scene.
The matter remains under investigation. There have been no arrests at this time.
