Valentine holds on for hard-fought road win at Gothenburg
VALENTINE, Neb. -- The Valentine boys basketball team survived a game of runs to win 52-49 at Gothenburg on Friday night.
The victory ended a streak of six-straight losses for the Badgers (9-10) against the Swedes (9-9) dating back to 2019.
Valentine built a solid lead early in the game thanks to hot shooting. The Badgers hit six three-pointers in the first quarter and held a 22-7 advantage.
The second quarter was the exact opposite. Gothenburg opened the period on an 11-point run and held the Badgers to one point in the entire quarter. Still, Valentine had the 23-20 advantage heading to the second half.
The Swedes moved in front 24-20 early in the third quarter but Valentine promptly regained the lead and held it the rest of the game. The teams largely traded baskets the rest of the game and Valentine's lead never grew to more than seven points. Gothenburg had a baseline inbound play down three points with less than five seconds left but couldn't hit a shot to tie the game at the buzzer.
Gothenburg finished the game 0-19 from beyond the arc.
Valentine senior Andon Olson led all scorers with 22 points. He reached 1,000 career points when he scored his 12th point of the game.
