LEXINGTON, NE — The Lexington football team is hoping to notch its first win on its new turf field.
After a summer of construction, a new $1.1 million field turf surface was installed at Ray Ehlers Stadium. Head Coach Jeff Rowan says staff has had conversations about getting a turf field for years.
“It was a group effort between our athletic director, superintendent and our school board," Rowan said. "It was a project that took a lot of people working really hard to pull it off so we’re excited about the final product. It looks really good and plays good.”
The school was proud of its previous grass field, but the surface was hard to maintain with all the different sports using it.
“It just took such a beating from every sport playing on it and the other activities going on. It just wouldn’t hold up," Rowan said. "With that being said, our kids are excited about (the new turf) and we’re darn glad to have it.”
The Minutemen competed hard but came up a touchdown short against perennial Class B power Norris in their first home game on the new field. They hope their strong senior class will lead them to a win over Hastings on Friday night.
“Senior leaders have done a great job for us spending extra time in the weight room and 7-on-7 in the summer," Rowan said.
In the 10 years I’ve been the head coach, this was the best buy-in summer. Now we’re just hoping some of that starts to pay off for them.”
